Welcome to Mr. Okum's AVI 4MI website
Here you will find handouts, resources and enrichment opportunities for the Visual Arts course.
The focus of this course is to develop a portfolio of work that will help you get into the post secondary institution of your choice. Alternately, this course will also help you understand why you are studying and creating art and challenge you to define who you are as an artist and where you want to go with art.
To start off we will be trying to understand what the role of the artist is in the 21st century. Why do we need artists? Who are the people making art in contemporary culture?
I would strongly suggest looking at who influences your work and choosing a few artists that are important to you.
There have been some wonderful discussions on this topic online recently. Look at the following links to help gain an appreciation of who is making art today and (more importantly) why they create it.
